Today is the 1-year anniversary of the passing of my friend Mike.
Mike had a heart of gold, an infectious smile, and he was quite the family man as a father of 2 and brother to 3.
Throughout the past year I’ve often caught myself saying, “Oh Mike” out loud when I randomly think about the sad fact that he’s gone and the devastating way he died. It hurts my heart that I couldn’t help him and it breaks my heart to think he may have felt there was no one to whom he could reach out.
“More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED”* Mental illness and suicide have become less stigmatized and the conversation surrounding both have increased, yet both remain prevalent issues.
My brother made the video below last year after Mike’s passing. If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide I encourage you to watch the video and pass it along.
